Discover Ristorante Lo Smeraldo

If you’re driving through Maranello and craving real Italian flavors, Ristorante Lo Smeraldo is the kind of place that makes you slow down and stay awhile. Tucked along Via Vignola, 247, 41053 Maranello MO, Italy, this local favorite sits just minutes from the Ferrari Museum, yet it feels wonderfully unhurried and authentically Modenese. I stopped by after a long afternoon exploring the area, and what started as a casual dinner turned into one of the most memorable meals I’ve had in Emilia-Romagna.

The first thing that strikes you is the atmosphere. It’s relaxed, welcoming, and refreshingly unpretentious. Families gather around large tables, couples linger over wine, and regulars greet the staff by name. That sense of community matters. According to research published by the Cornell School of Hotel Administration, diners consistently rate warmth of service and atmosphere as key drivers of restaurant satisfaction. You feel that here immediately. The service isn’t rushed; it’s attentive in a way that makes you feel genuinely looked after.

The menu reflects the culinary traditions of the region. Emilia-Romagna is widely recognized by organizations such as the Italian Academy of Cuisine as one of Italy’s gastronomic heartlands, famous for handmade pasta, aged balsamic vinegar from Modena, and Parmigiano Reggiano. At this restaurant, those traditions aren’t just listed-they’re honored. I ordered tagliatelle al ragù, and the pasta had that slightly rough texture you only get from fresh egg dough rolled and cut in-house. The sauce was rich but balanced, slow-cooked for hours until the flavors melded perfectly. You can taste the patience.

Another standout was the gnocco fritto served with cured meats. The dough arrives puffed and golden, light on the inside and crisp outside. Paired with prosciutto and salami sourced from local producers, it becomes more than a starter; it’s a celebration of regional ingredients. The emphasis on quality sourcing aligns with what the Slow Food movement, founded in Italy, has long advocated: respect for local food culture and sustainable production. While the restaurant doesn’t advertise itself as part of any movement, the philosophy shows up clearly on the plate.

Their pizza deserves a mention too. Baked in a traditional oven, the crust achieves that delicate balance between chewy and crisp. I watched from my table as the pizzaiolo worked the dough by hand, stretching it carefully before adding San Marzano tomatoes and fresh mozzarella. The result was simple and confident-proof that good ingredients don’t need much embellishment.

Wine lovers will appreciate the thoughtful selection of Lambrusco and other regional labels. Emilia-Romagna’s sparkling reds often surprise visitors, yet they pair beautifully with hearty dishes. The staff explained the differences between a dry Lambrusco Grasparossa and a slightly fruitier Sorbara, which added a layer of enjoyment to the meal. That kind of guidance builds trust; you’re not just ordering a drink, you’re learning something along the way.

Online reviews consistently praise the generous portions and fair pricing. From what I experienced, those comments are accurate. Plates are abundant without feeling excessive, and the pricing remains reasonable for the quality offered. Transparency is important, though-like many popular restaurants near tourist attractions, it can get busy on weekends. Booking ahead is wise, especially during peak travel months.

What sets this Maranello restaurant apart isn’t just the food. It’s the rhythm of the evening. Courses arrive at a comfortable pace. Conversations stretch naturally. Dessert-mine was a classic tiramisu-comes with just enough sweetness to close the meal without overwhelming it. The mascarpone was airy, the espresso flavor pronounced but smooth, and the cocoa dusting perfectly balanced.

Dining here feels like stepping into everyday Italian life rather than a staged tourist experience. The flavors are grounded in tradition, the service is sincere, and the setting is easygoing. For anyone exploring Maranello or simply searching for a reliable trattoria with a strong local identity, this address on Via Vignola stands out for all the right reasons.

  • If you only go to one restaurant in Maranello then this is the one you have to go to. Especially if you're here for the cars or racing. The atmosphere is great, very friendly and kind. The prices are normal and not at all as high as the Ambiente would make you think. Amazing Neapolitan style pizza with great toppings, the gnocchi and seafood pasta were also great and interesting. I was a bit disappointed by the tortellini, but only because they were not as exciting and special as the other dishes we ordered. The desserts were also great. I liked it, but since we couldn't tell from the (Italian) desserts menu the children were disappointed because they couldn't eat their amazingly looking treats.

  • This restaurant was recommended by the hotel that we stayed at. The pizza was incredible, the best pizza that I have ever had. The crust was perfect and the cheese and sauce were delicious. Same with the gnocchi, it was pillowy soft and unlike any gnocchi that I've ever had before. The restaurant too has a lot of Ferrari memorabilia and a lot of Ferrari VIPs and F1 drivers have visited this restaurant so you know it is good.

  • This place has the best pizza, toppings just right and crust so light and fluffy. They do a supersized version where you can choose to get it with 3 different toppings and try the 3 speciality pizzas, and while you eat you can be mesmerised by the walls full of Ferrari memorabilia all over! By the way the bacon one is SO good!

  • What a gem! We stopped with a group of 18 on a Sunday for lunch between test driving and museum and what a place. We were greeted with warmth from staff. The owner was present, showed me his private dining room and English magazine article explain restaurant story. Great memorabilia throughout. Food was fantastic, authentic Napoletana pizza style and great pastas. Highly recommended.

  • Coming back here again for the second time. We ordered several dishes to try. Everything was a delicious perfection. Not sure what some of the reviewers are saying about the service. It was superb. Thanks you for hosting. We had a wonderful time.

  • The best pizza we had I Italy on our 14 days trip! And one of the best prices. A must go for Ferrari/F1 fans! The atmosphere of the restaurant is one of a kind.

  • I am left speechless after two vists here. I doubt there is a second place on Earth similar to this. Place where the boss himself, the man, the myth, the legend - Signior Apicella, makes sure you are feeling like home. Waitress Agnieszka, made us feel especially welcome here, because she spoke our language :). The food is stellar, the staff speaks English (and Polish ;) ) the prices are reasonable. Make sure to make reservation before the visit - the place is very popular, and not witouth reason. If you play your cards right, you might be allowed to take a peek at the special car of Signior Apicella ;) Once more - grazie mille to Signior Apicella and the crew!

  • Came across this place on accident but WOW! Gorgeous building, a lot to take in, service was top class and the pizza? WOW To top it off, on the way out the owner shown me to some memorabilia not yet open to the public. Mind blown and very generous
